We were shocked to hear of the possible new housing development in the fields above Gwynant, Old Colwyn. Initial emotions centred on sadness at the loss of such a large area of beautiful open farmland much appreciated by current residents. This was followed by questioning of the rationality of the proposal. Many services in Old Colwyn are already under severe pressure. Adding several hundred new properties would push many of these beyond breaking point. We acknowledge that planners have built in the need for a new school and doctors surgery but they have not addressed the difficulties that would result in staffing these facilities. In particular there is already a major problem finding GPs who are prepared to relocate to North Wales.Drainage is another significant issue. In recent years we have seen sewage and drainage structures unable to cope along the Old Colwyn promenade. Both Network Rail and Welsh Water, terrified of the cost implications, have tried to deflect responsibility to each other. Adding several acres of concrete and tarmac above this area is surely likely to have disastrous consequences for the crumbling system. Our final and most important objection is the effect on our road network. At busy times the roads in the area are congested to a point close to gridlock. The possibility of adding over a thousand new vehicles to this network will surely bring key hubs such as Marine Roundabout to a grinding halt.
We hope the planners responsible for the coming decisions will take on board the genuine concerns of local residents and realise that this proposal would be a disaster for our area.
